Soriana Sofa by Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Cassina, 1970, Italy

This is a great opportunity to own a piece of Italian Design History and have it with your preferred color. We are offering a Soriana medium Sofa designed by Tobia Scarpa for Cassina in the 1970s, an iconic and very important piece of design which won the Compasso D'Oro prestigious award in 1969.

This sofa will be restored inside and out to the best possible conditions by a professional Italian Restorer who already restored this model for other customers of ours. The inside seat padding will be replaced with new Dupont Dacron 650 gr filling. You can have your choice of leather or fabric. Recommended for this kind of sofa is a soft all natural leather or a high quality velvet which we offer in different colors. Restoration will start once the order is placed and it may take any time between 13 to 16 weeks (the restoration is performed in Italy and this lead time includes shipping from Italy to our warehouse in NJ) Local delivery time for delivery from the NJ warehouse to final delivery location is calculated extra and depends from the location itself.

Our prices are very competitive considering the extensive work it takes to restore a 1970s sofa, while many of our competitors sell these sofas “as is” often with strings, rips and deflated cushions for a very small difference.

The leather we use is a full natural leather of the highest quality manufactured in Italy with the best “hand” to work with this sofa and to recreate of that wonderful folds without having that “plastic feel” look which might come out if a wrong or too hard or poor quality leather is used. There are thousands of quality of leathers out there! Our leather is a truly natural leather with a clear, wax finish that reveals all the features of full grain leather and highlights the rich, natural toning throughout the hide. This leather provides a beautiful patina over time and extended wear actually enhances its look and appeal.

Italian 20th Century Design: Afra & Tobia Scarpa

Afra and Tobia Scarpa have put their know-how into products ranging from home furniture to clothing. Their works can be found in museums across the USA and Europe as in the Moma and the Louvre. They won several awards such as the prestigious Italian “Compasso D’Oro” with the Soriana design, and and the International Forum Design in 1992. Tobia’s father Carlo Scarpa was also a great architect and designers from the Mid Century Period and worked with famous names such as historic Ventian Murano glass company Venini, where also Tobia worked later on. Some of the major works of the two architects include the Coronado Sofa for B&B Italia (1966) and the Soriana Sofa for Cassina 1970. With Gavina they created the “Bastiano” sofa (1961) and they designed the "Papillona" and "Pierrot" lamps for Flos in the 1977 and 1990.  Their works extended to fashion where they thrived in a collaboration with fashion house Benetton. Their products played an important role in the history of Italian Design and are thriving in the Mid Century market.
